What Time Is It?
Dustin the Oklahoma Gas & Power Company employee, died on March 20th.
Lynda Bloome, Head of Sales of the Oasis Plains Estates, dies on March 25th.
On March 26th, the curse is broken.
Now, Which One Was That?
Dean and Sam travel to Oasis Plains, Oklahoma after a construction worker is killed by insects. They investigate the town's history and find that the new housing development is being built on sacred Indian land.
All the Niggling Little Details
  • The bar where Dean is hustling pool is called The Loading Dock.
  • The town this episode takes place in - Oasis Plains, Oklahoma - is not a real town.
  • Oklahoma Gas & Power is the employer of the first victim of the bug attacks.
  • Oasis Plans Estates is the name of the housing development where Larry and his family live.
  • When Dean and Sam are speaking with Joe Whitetree, Sam says that Oasis Plains is near the Atoka Valley. There is no such valley in Oklahoma, but there is an Akota County and a city called Atoka.
  • The tribe that put the curse on the land is the Euchee Indian tribe. They really are located in Sapulpa, OK.
  • The moving company the Pike family uses is called "D.I.Y. Mover" (which I'm going to assume stands for "Do It Yourself") and is not a real moving company. Their phone number is (918)-555-0129. (918) is a real Oklahoma area code.
  • Sam wore:
  • Outfit #1 - Maroon t-shirt (is there a...person on it?), white and tan plaid shirt, khaki jacket with the zippered pocket. Very dark blue jeans. Black sneakers with white on the side.
  • Outfit #2 - Long-sleeved light gray t-shirt, maroon button-up shirt, khaki jacket with zippered pocket. The same dark blue jeans. He also takes the jacket off to hide the box of bones.
  • Outfit #3 - Dark blue t-shirt (probably the greyhound t-shirt), different blues vertically striped button-up shirt, khaki jacket with pocket zipper. Blue jeans with some holes.
  • Dean wore:
  • Outfit #1 - Dark gray t-shirt, dark blue button-up shirt, brown leather jacket. Blue jeans with small hole in the thigh.
  • Outfit #2 - Black t-shirt, dark blue button-up shirt, brown leather jacket. Very faded blue jeans.
  • Outfit #3 - Black t-shirt, olive green button-up shirt, brown leather jacket. Blue jeans.
Where'd That Myth Come From?
  • While there is nothing specific on the myth the Winchester's fight in this episode, there are some famous Native American Curses.
  • The Cornstalk Curse was put on Point Pleasant, West Virginia where Chief Cornstalk used his dying breath to curse the town, "...may the curse of the Great Spirit rest upon this land. May it be blighted by nature. May it even be blighted in its hopes. May the strength of its peoples be paralyzed by the stain of our blood.” This curse has very similar wording to the curse Joe Whitetree repeats to Sam. "No white man will ever tarnish this land again. Nature would rise up and protect the valley."
  • Tecumseh's Curse is another well known curse that is believed to have killed every US President who was elected in a "zero year" before the end of their term.
From the Super-Canon Supernatural Cannon Resource
  • Bowhunting (archery) - The practice of using a bow and arrow to shoot. Bowhunting has historically been used in hunting and combat, and has become a precision sport.
  • Elementals - According to mysticism and mythology, elementals are creatures (usually a spirit) composed of or attuned to air, earth, fire and water. The elementals balance each other out through opposites: water quenches fire, fire boils water, earth contains air, air erodes earth. Water spirits are called undines, earth spirits gnomes, air spirits sylphs, and fire spirits salamanders.
  • Telepath - One who communicates through telepathy – the declared inborn skill of humans and other creatures to exchange information from one mind to another, without speech or body language. Telepathy is often connected to various paranormal phenomena such as precognition, clairvoyance and empathy and is probably the most paranormal subject holding the greatest interest.
What's in a Name?
  • The boys go by Sam and Dean in this one, although they do try to pass themselves off as "Uncle Dusty's nephews" and "students from the University".
  • Sam/Sammy Battle: Dean says "Sam" twice, Sam says "Dean" five times, and no instances of "Sammy" occur.
What Did You Just Say?
Dean: Mad cow. Wasn't that on Oprah?
Sam: You watch Oprah?

+++++

Dean:
Looks like there's only room for one. You want to flip a coin?
Sam: Dean, we have no idea what's down there.
Dean: All right. I'll go if you're scared. Scared?
Sam: Flip the damn coin!
Dean: (chuckles) Call it in the air. (mutters) Chicken. (flips coin)
Sam: (snatching the coin from the air) I'm going.
Dean: I said I'd go!
Sam: I'm going.
Dean: Alright.
Sam: Don't drop me.

+++++

Dean:
So you found some beetles. In a hole in the ground. That's shocking, Sam.

+++++

Sam:
There's nothing wrong with normal.
Dean: I'd take our family over normal any day.

+++++

Larry:
Let me just say, we accept home owners of any race, religion, color or...(pauses as he looks the boys over)...sexual orientation.
Dean: (pauses) We’re brothers.
(later at the same barbeque)
Lynda: Let me just say, we accept home owners of any race, religion, color, or...(pauses as she looks the boys over)...sexual orientation.
Dean: Right. Um, I'm going to go talk to Larry. Okay, Honey? (smacks Sam on the ass)

+++++

Sam:
Right! Right, like when I said I'd rather play soccer than learn bow hunting.
Dean: Bow hunting's an important skill.
Counting the Cost
Pain Quotient:
  • Sam Owies: None.
  • Dean Owies: None.
  • Collateral Damage: Dustin: Dead. Lynda: Dead.
  • The Bad, the Ugly, and the Dead: There is no mention of whether or not the curse is actually broken. The boys save the Pike family by fending off the bug swarm until morning, since the curse will have run it's course.  So basically the boys outsmart the curse by waiting it out. *shrug*  Yes, that is completely lame, but that's what they do. Dean does fashion a flame-thrower out of a can of bug spray though.
  • Metallicar Watch: No incidents. However, she does gets parked in a garage for once!
  • Zippo Count: None. Although Dean does use it to turn the can of bug spray into a torch.
  • Sacrificed on the Altar of Whoops!
  • The rain. It rains for the majority of the episode, yet the boys never get any mud on their boots.
  • The timeline. The timing of the last fifteen minutes just doesn't make any sense. It's clearly still light outside when the boys leave Joe Whitetree to head back to Oasis Plains. They only have to travel about 60 miles to get back to the Pike house, yet when they arrive, Sam makes specific note that it is midnight. Did they stop for dinner on the way back? A movie? Was there a traffic jam? It should have only taken them about an hour, two if they were driving on all back roads that were only 25mph.
  • Further timeline problems. When Sam and Dean arrive, they usher everyone into the house, run upstairs to the attic to huddle up against a wall, and after hunching their shoulders for all of two minutes, the sun comes up. Sam just said it was midnight. *bangs head repeatedly* So apparently in Oklahoma, the sun rises at 12:05am. Suspend your disbelief with me, everyone.
  • When Lynda Bloome is attacked by spiders, she starts to run and falls through the glass shower door and the door falls inward. Later when you see her dead on the floor the glass has fallen outwards.
