Heavy Meta Poisoning
Supernatural is truth
ADMIN: How to Write the Bible
7th-May-2006 01:38 pm

This is a plan. Whether it's a good plan is up to you. If I could get some input here in the next day or so, that'd be good.

Proposed Bible Format

1x00 Episode Title

Boring Production Crap
List airdate, writer, director, guest stars, etc. A good place to get this info is The Supernatural episode guide at TV.com
What Time Is It?
If we can pinpoint an actual date or time for the episode (such as Halloween, 2005, in the case of the pilot), please do so here. Or make a bit of speculation if it looks like this episode flows right from the previous, or there's a lot of time in between...
Now, Which One Was That?
Simple synopsis. Tells all the main high points, but doesn't concern itself with all the niggling little details. Also, if you have a favorite screencap from the episode, it can go here. If you need a place to post it, there are a few of us who can spend the diskspace and bandwidth.
All the Niggling Little Details
Just what it says. Included should be any details that look significant (for current episodes) or turned out to be significant (for older episodes). This can always be edited later if we find out things are more important than we thought they were.
Where'd That Myth Come From?
Here's the place to post any information you might want to dig up about the myth/monster/whatever that they're fighting this week. Or supernatural info on the city they visit, if it seems like it might have something to do with the "big story." Also, interesting things like "They're in Richardson, TX. Did you know Jensen is from there?"
What's in a Name?
A place for all the pseudonyms the boys use in the episode.
What Did You Just Say?
Quotes you like.
Counting the Cost
All the different important costs of the episode, including Pain Quotient (count the owies for the boys [and papa, if he bothers to show up]), Collateral Damage (dead innocents), The Bad, the Ugly, and the Dead (Dead bad guys), Metallicar Watch (any damage to the lovely Impala), Zippo Count (used in the not-so-rare event that Dean sacrifices yet another beautiful Zippo lighter to the cause), Sacrificed on the Altar of Whoops! (Gaffs and Goofs). You can make up new counts if you run across something you've noticed in previous episodes. If you're doing a retro episode (one that aired a while ago), make sure the counts don't include episodes that followed this one in airdate.
Driver Picks the Music
List of music that appears in the episode. This can be found on the WB site (This is the link), but keep in mind, they're not always thorough.
What Did They Just Say?
Here's where linking is a good, good thing. Each bible entry will eventually be linked to all the "official" Heavy Metas for that episode, but feel free to publish links to any other episode-related metas here.

Each bible entry keeper is responsible for editing her individual bible entry if someone else brings up a mistake or an addition. Also, once we're finished with season one's bible entries, they'll be archived on my website (or someone else's if someone is so inclined), and we can archive season two's as they happen.

I know this seems strict, but it's only a preliminary idea. There's lots of room for additions and changes. I just want people to be able to come here and have a nice, consistent bible, you know?

Anyway, please comment here with any and all suggestions you have for making this a better bible.

Edited to Add: Made some changes based on suggestions. What think you?

Kthxbye!

Hi! :) I joined the comm, hope it's okay.

That bible format looks neat. Could there be a place for an image from the episode? Not a whole screen-cap gallery taking up bandwidth and whatnot, but a single image? The episode in a nutshell sort of thing?
7th-May-2006 09:03 pm (UTC)
It's only okay that you joined if you'll meta for a couple of epis *g*, otherwise--get ye gone!

I think whether a screencap would go in or not might have to be up to the bible keeper for that episode. I'm cool with hosting a few caps on my site--I have a small site, but lots of unused bandwidth--for the people who don't have room. Also, I'd eventually want to assemble the whole bible on a website, so we'd want to add something in the way of picspam there.

*cocks head* What do you guys think? Photos, no photos?

I'd love to meta for a couple of episodes. :) I love to meta on just about anything.

That's a great idea, to collect it all to a single website. This will be a neat summer project to get ready for Season 2. (Because we will have a season 2. Yes, we will!)
7th-May-2006 09:19 pm (UTC)
That was kind of what I thought--about it being a good way to keep the meta alive over the summer. Then, when season two starts (and it will, damn it!), we can still keep going, and have a nice, active community and a good writers' resource.

Pick whichever episodes you want to meta on and comment with them in the original admin post, so I know they're covered (I'm assuming you'll be metaing on Dean? Or Papa?). I'll pencil you in for those. There are hard and firm deadlines for the bible entries, but the metas can be posted anytime.

I'm sorry this reply is so late!

I'll go take a look at the original admin post, to see what episodes aren't taken yet. I'm not necessarily meta'ing Dean or John, unless we need to pick a specific character to focus on...? (I rambled off a Sam meta recently which was probably not very organized. If you could glance at it and see if that's the sort of character meta you had in mind...?)

Drat, I need to go read through the rules again. Will do, pronto! :)

I can think of a few things that could easily go into "details," or that you could break out to keep that section from being too overwhelming (and if you decide not to break them out, it would still be great to encourage people to post about them):

- A section on the legend/folklore featured in a particular episode, maybe with a brief synopsis of the actual legend, how it's applied in the episode, and some links.

- Assuming you can tie this stuff to canon, a section that relates to the geographic locations they visit or reference (like Kripke noting at the Paley Festival that Lawrence has RL significance, or Jensen being from Richardson) and anything about those locations that seem to be referenced in the show.

- A place to note the timeline - when is a particular episode taking place?

- Injuries? I think both that and timeline would be of particular use to fic writers who are trying to adhere to canon as much as they can. Probably good under "counting the cost," right next to times the poor Impala gets "hurt." :)

Anyway, just some ideas, and nothing I think is absolutely necessary - I just know some of these are things I'm interested in when I watch or that I sometimes try to remember after the fact, and digging through the episodes is time-consuming.

Also, I have 80 gazillion gigs of unused bandwidth, so I'd be willing to host anything that doesn't blatantly break copyright law (like episodes). :)

I love all those ideas! I've tried to incorporate them into the form (and I will make an html file of this, to make things easier for the bible keepers). You like changes?

that I sometimes try to remember after the fact, and digging through the episodes is time-consuming.

Which, really, is the whole reason I wanted to start this. YAY!

Thanks for the suggestions. Now, must get back to work on the Pilot bible entry....

Awesome, you totally rock! :)

Love this and love the comm too! I just had one two quick questions. Number one: What's the coding for a bible entry? Because I lack the neccesary fu needed for this and yet want to do an entry or a few. Second question is this: Do we have to do the bible entries in order or could I volunteer for like, episode 0109 while we're at 0104 or something?
14th-May-2006 10:23 pm (UTC)
You can volunteer (and boy I'd love for you to do so!) to do any bible entry any time you want. Ditto on the metas. The only trick with the bible entries is that they should go up on the designated Tuesday for that entry. The "official heavy metas" can go up at any time.

I'll put together that grid tonight (finally)--so people can let me know which episodes they'd like. I have a couple I'd like to snag for myself, too :). Did you want to actually do 109, or was that just an example?

Also, email me and we can talk about the best way for me to get you the coding for the bible entries. I'm not sure how I'm going to do that, bow you've said that. *g*

Oh you really have no idea how happy that makes this Geek right here. Seriously.

That was an example but I will to go up for any. I'd kinda love to grab 0107 and 0108 because I'm about to watch them for the first time within th next few days here and it would give me an excuse to take notes and stuff. Though I'd love 0103, 0106 and 0118 too.

It'd probably be more fair to everyone else if you put a limit on these. Otherwise I'm liable to claim them all when you put it up.

Sweet. @livejournal.com right?
14th-May-2006 11:02 pm (UTC)
Yes, indeed! @ lj!

And yeah, I'm thinking that, for now, each person can only claim two episodes--though that could always change if there aren't enough o fus volunteering, but... that's the plan.

So give me an hour or so to put together the grid and have dinner :), and you can comment in the upcoming grid post with the two you want to do.

But go ahead and take notes on the ones you're watching now, anyway, because, hey! Geek! *g* I do it all the time now! We had a friend over last night to run "Wendigo" through "Hookman," and I spent the whole evening thinking about all the things that should go into the bible entry! And if the person doing the bible entry doesn't catch what you catch, you just comment in the entry and they can add it--which reminds me that I really need to update the first one...

Yes, Geek, thy name is deannie.

It's horrible but I almost hope no one remembers to claim any. I am such a freak.

Yay! Now I just have to figure out which two I want.

But go ahead and take notes on the ones you're watching now, anyway, because, hey! Geek! *g* I do it all the time now!

When 0103 and 0104 go up I'll totally have my Geekage ready to add on from those eps.

This is an awesome template, thanks. I picked Salvation Bible Entry and I just wondered if I have to wait until the date it's due, or can I post it whenever?

I obviously don't listen if you've already said that somewhere...

And also, I have website space availale. A lot actually, because I have just that much room. So I really don't mind making a website for the Supernatural Bible (:P) If you wanted to put it up there?
24th-May-2006 03:12 pm (UTC)
I obviously don't listen if you've already said that somewhere...

I think your question has more to do with my obsessive-compulsive disorder than your lack of listening skills. *g*

I had planned to have one bible entry per week, so if you can stand it, I'd like to hold off on posting the BE for "Salvation" until its due date.

But, you know, if you want to post it now, it's everyone's community, not just mine, so... whatever you like is cool.

And we'll need to get together and talk about putting up a website, because I'd planned to do that once we got farther into the bible (i.e., once the front matter is done), and I've got a tiny website. If you're willing to deal with it, we should plan, yes?

Oh yeah! I'm totally willing, and I had figured that you wouldn't want to do it until later. I'm happy to wait. Just let me know when you're ready to set it up, and we'll talk ^^ This is awesome! *g*
