Now, Which One Was That?
The return of Sam's precognitive visions (the first occurrence since Home) sends the brothers to Saginaw, MI, and the doorstep of Max Miller, an abused young man with powers of telekinesis and a contempt for tuna casserole, whose family members are being killed off exactly as the visions foretell. Along the way, Sam learns that he shares a common tragedy with Max, whose mother also died in a fire above his crib, and also a common supernatural gift, moving a piece of furniture with nothing but the power of his mind (and a healthy dose of manlove, natch).

All the Niggling Little Details
  • Dean touches Sam six times, for a total duration of approximately 3 minutes, 10 seconds. (This includes roughly 2 minutes of vision-time, during which Dean presumably supports Sam.)

  • Sam touches Dean five times, for a total duration of approximately 1 minutes, 58 seconds. (This includes roughly 1.5 minutes of vision-time and a burst of psychic manlove. Unfortunately, it does not include the Spoon Challenge, which would have nudged it over 2 minutes.)

  • Random Stats: They spend roughly 8.27% of the episode touching, 6.64% of the episode as priests, 11.96% of the episode driving, 2.38% of the episode cleaning guns, and 2.61% of the episode lounging against the Impala.

  • Dean sleeps in the bed nearest to the door in the first motel. The sleeping arrangements for the second motel are unclear.

  • Dean makes a lousy priest. Sam is a natural. This is disturbing.

  • Recognize this little exchange from the script?
Dean: You look like last week's road kill.
Sam: Thanks... You always know how to make me feel special.

  • Dean takes approximately 20 seconds to eat his first wiener. How long it takes him to eat the second wiener is unknown.

  • When Sam asks Mrs. Miller for permission to go speak with Max, he emphasizes the word "I". Mrs. Miller is very grateful. Meanwhile: Dean is chewing on something. Wiener cud?

  • Dean uses a high-tech "infrared thermal scanner." Deanamajig or Best Buy? Dean plays with it for approximately 40 seconds, and we never see it again. This suggests that it is an ineffective Best Buy product which Dean splurged on in response to Sam's EMF insult, and which was soon discarded by a disgruntled Dean while Sam wasn't looking.

  • They remember to wipe off their fingerprints from the stairwell outside Roger Miller's apartment. If I recall correctly, this is the first and last time we see them do anything like this.

  • Dean glances down at the coffee table once, as they talk with Max halfway through the episode. It's unclear whether he is searching for wieners or something more sinister.

  • Neighbor Man asks Sam and Dean casually if they are "looking to buy." He is either more naturally accepting than Larry Pike or completely unaware of subtext.

  • In several shots before the confrontation with Max, we see Dean steer the Impala with his open palm. He also keeps his eyes on the road roughly 80% of the time. This makes him both a good driver and a sexy one.

  • Sam tells Max he just wants to talk with him for 5 minutes. They end up talking for approximately 5 minutes, 15 seconds. Sam almost reaches Max, but then the 5 minute buzzer rings in Max's head, and it's into the closet for Sam. Damn. Kid's pretty strict.

  • Max was originally scripted to say "There's only one way to end this" after his "You're right" to Sam.
Where'd That Myth Come From?
  • There is no weekly myth here. This is a direct link to the central Demon mythology.

  • We learn that Sam is not alone in the Demonic target practice. Max is supernaturally gifted, as is Sam. One has precognitive dreams; they both have powers of telekinesis. This episode does not give us a clear answer as to why their mothers were killed, or if the Demon gave them their powers or was drawn to their natural powers, but it does give us strong hints that they were both chosen for some purpose.
What's in a Name?
  • Dean introduces himself to the Miller family as Father Simmons.
Sam is introduced by Dean as Father Frehley.

  • They were originally scripted to introduce themselves as Fathers Dean and Samuel.
Sam was also scripted to say: "Just tone it down, Father Freako."

  • Sam/Sammy Battle: Sam: 7, Sammy: 1
What Did You Just Say?
Sam: Well, don't look at me like that.
Dean: I'm not looking at you like anything. But I do gotta say you look like crap.
Sam: Nice. Thanks.

Sam [re: the priest outfits]: This has got to be a whole new low for us.

Sam: Just tone it down a little bit. Father.

Dean: If you’re gonna hurl, I’ll pull the car over, you know, ‘cause the upholstery...

Roger Miller: What are you guys, missionaries?

Sam: You can’t tell me this doesn’t freak you out.
Dean: ...This doesn’t freak me out.

Sam: Well, I know one thing I have in common with these people.
Dean: What's that?
Sam: Both our families are cursed.
Dean: Our family's not cursed. We've just had our dark spots.
Sam: Our dark spots are pretty dark.
Dean: You're... dark.

Max: All these people kept coming with, like, casseroles. I finally had to tell them all to go away. You know, 'cause nothing says “I'm sorry” like a tuna casserole.

Dean: So, he's psychic? He's a spoon-bender?

Sam: We're not going to kill Max.
Dean: Then what? Hand him over to the cops and say, "Lock him up, officer; he kills with the power of his mind"?

Sam: Well, I'll tell you one thing. We're lucky we had Dad.
Dean: I never thought I'd hear you say that.
Sam: Well, it could have gone a whole 'nother way after Mom. A little more tequila, a little less demon hunting, then we would have had Max's childhood. All things considered, we turned out okay. Thanks to him.
Dean: ...All things considered.

Sam: Dean, I've been thinking.
Dean: That's never a good thing.

Sam: When Max locked me in that closet, that big cabinet against the door... I moved it.
Dean: You have a little more upper body strength than I gave you credit for.
Sam: No, man. I moved it. Like... Max.
Dean: ...Oh. ...Right.
Sam: Yeah. [turns away]
[pause. then]
Dean [holds out spoon]: Bend this.

Sam: Aren't you worried, man? Aren't you worried that I could turn into Max or something?
Dean: Nope. No way. You know why?
Sam: No. Why?
Dean: Because you got one advantage that Max didn't have.
Sam: Dad? Because Dad's not here, Dean.
Dean: No. Me. As long as I'm around, nothing bad is gonna happen to you. [pause] Now, then. I know what we need to do about your premonitions. I know where we have to go.
Sam: Where?
Dean: Vegas.
[Sam, incredulous, walks off in a huff.]
Dean: What? Come on, man. Craps table. We'd clean up.
Counting the Cost
Pain Quotient:
  • Sam Owie: (4) headaches from the visions.

  • Sam Owie: is pulled into a closet. He possibly bumps something, but it is unclear.
(He also suffers psychic manangst. Does that count?)

  • Dean Owie: is thrown against (2) walls. We only see the first time, but it's the second time that counts. If it happened at all.

  • Dean Owie: gets (1) shot in the head. But not really.

Collateral Damage: Jim Miller, Roger Miller, Max Miller

The Bad, the Ugly, and the Dead: Anything I put here would require a meta.

Metallicar Watch: Our gal's not injured this time around.

Zippo Count: N/A

Sacrificed on the Altar of Whoops!

  • The Escanaba Motel is where Sam and Dean stay while in Saginaw, but Escanaba, MI, is actually five hours away, by MapQuest. (source: TV.com)

  • Different shots outside of Roger Miller's apartment show Sam alternately holding perfectly still, gripping the railing, and flailing about slightly with one hand in the air, before Dean reminds him to wipe off his fingerprints.

  • The establishing shot of Sam & Dean talking with Neighbor Man show the Impala some feet away and to the side of where they are standing. After that, we see it directly behind the brothers.

  • Sam can't decide whether he wants his arm around Dean's shoulders or not, when he's struck by his third vision. I tried to fanwank a reason for this, but, yes, I realize that it's just a continuity error.

  • Not a technical goof, but really, Dean screwed up big time with the gun.

  • Sam says to Max "We'll get Dean and Alice out of here." Why would he call her by name to her son?

  • In the vision, when Max walks into the room where Dean and Mrs. Miller are, the door bangs before it shuts.

  • The wall against which Dean was thrown in the vision is dent-free in the real version. Is this a continuity error, or an indication that the scene did not go exactly as Sam imagined it?

  • We hear the gunshot before the gun is fired.
