What Time Is It?
God only knows.

Sam and Dean travel to Chicago to investigate the mysterious death of a girl who is ripped apart inside her locked apartment.  While on the case, Sam runs into Meg, who turns out to be very involved with the Winchesters and their current case.
All the Niggling Little Details
  • Coming as soon as I translate the notes I took while watching into something readable.

Where'd That Myth Come From?
This information comes directly from the pad of definitions from the Official Supernatural Site.  If/when I find more information for any of this, this section will be updated.
  • Wraith-like Figure/Wraith Shadow: The Wraith Shadow is a wraith's worst nightmare. The shadow personifies the worst and most self-destructive parts of the wraith's persona. The wraith shadow is a result of shame and self-disgust of the wraith, when it goes too far in following its own inner persona.

  • Werewolves: Emerging from Greek Mythology, the werewolf is a person who changes into a wolf by means of magic or by being placed under a curse. Most of the time, this transformation is brought on by the appearance of a full moon. It is believed that the only way to kill a werewolf is with a silver bullet.

  • Zoroastrianism: An ancient Iranian religion with similarities to the faiths of Northern India and the Viking religions of Northern Europe. The monotheistic religion focuses on one central god: Ahura Mazda. Ahura Mazda is said to be the beginning and the end and the creator of everything. The religion can be summed up in one simple phrase "Good thoughts, good words, good deeds."

  • Zoroastrian Symbol: A symbol that depicts the human soul before birth and after death.

  • Daeva: In the Zoroastrian religion, a daeva is a demonic and destructive being. Daevas are combated by the ahuras who help to uphold the moral law.
What's in a Name?
  • Sam and Dean use no aliases in this episode.  Even their alarm company uniforms have their real first names on them.

  • Sam/Sammy Battle: Dean calls him "Sam" eight times; John calls him "Sam" twice and "Sammy" twice.  Sam is the overwhelming victor.  Sam says "Dean" eight times, also).

Counting the Cost
Pain Quotient: Yet another episode fraught with mental damage.  Dean lets his guard down and tells Sam he wants them to be a family again, only to tell John they have to split up.  That must've been pretty painful.  And if that weren't enough, everyone gets injured.
  • Lots of damage to all three Winchesters from the daevas' claws.
  • Both boys get tied up by Meg and suffer a little ropeburn trying to get free.
  • Sam hurts his head headbutting Meg in order to escape and destroy the altar.

Collateral Damage: Meredith and the other victim of the daevas (the guy who looks like Patrick Stewart).

The Bad, the Ugly, and the Dead: No one dies.  The Winchesters manage to escape the daevas, but don't actually kill them.  Meg survives her big fall and comes out alive at the end.

Metallicar Watch: The Impala survives the mean streets of Vancouver Chicago with no problems.

Zippo Count: No fire in this episode, unless you count the flare.

Sacrificed on the Altar of Whoops!

  • When the boys investigate Meredith's apartment, Dean is able to reconstruct the Zoroastrian symbol from a seemingly random blood spatter pattern on the floor.  That's all well and good, but Dean goes on to say he's never seen that particular symbol before.  So, if he doesn't know what the symbol is, how was he able to find it in the first place?  How does he even know it's a real symbol?
